The 1901 Census for Wimpole, Cambridgeshire.
Reference: Ref. RG11/1656 (with acknowledgement to the
Public Record Office)
Date of Census:31 March 1901
There is a national Census every ten years when
the year ends in a one. This page details the population of the Parish
of Wimpole on the night of 31 March 1901 (the list includes children and visitors
from outside the parish in temporary residence within Wimpole on the night
of the census).
The population of the Parish of Wimpole on the night of the 1901 Census was: 240.
My thanks and acknowledgements to the 'census team' who provided the documentation and who typed and checked the various page transcripts back in 2002/2003. Particular thanks to Mike Giddings, Susan Giddings, Alexandra Morton and John Parkins for all their help, assistance and encouragement. Any errors are probably mine.
Columns (left to right):

2. Relation to Head of Household.
3. Married, Widow, Widowed or Unmarried (18 years and
over).
4. Age.

6. Place of Birth.
The cottage numbers shown below were those used in 1901 and do not relate to postal addresses today. I have provided the modern postal address if known.
[Information, notes and comments additional to the 1901 Census are generally shown italicised within square brackets]
I would be pleased to hear from you if you can offer any additional genealogical or family information relevant to this page, especially if you possess old photographs that could be added to this site for those who follow. Please use the site's Contact Page in the first instance.
This page was moved to the new .org website in November 2019. The page has been re-headed at the top and re-footed (if re-footed is indeed a word) at the bottom. The page text below this note dated from 2003 and is awaiting resetting. I will rework the images and links as I come to them. All the census information for 1901 is complete, just somewhat untidy...
This is the 1901 Census for the
Parish of Wimpole in Cambridgeshire.
There were 240 men, women and
children living in the Parish of Wimpole on the 31 March 1901. Of
those 121 are male and 119 are female. Only 114 (48%) were born
in the parish and 24 (10%) gave their county of birth as Cornwall.
The sudden appearance of the Cornish tenant farmers and their families
since the previous census is quite marked and I assume this is because
of the Robartes family, owners of Wimpole Hall, and their links
with the family estate in Lanhydrock.
Unlike the 1881 and 1891 census, the 1901 starts
with the high moral ground (the Rectory), sidesteps to the landed
gentry at Wimpole Hall (not that the landed gentry are at home)
then works its way through the outlying farms and lodges down to
the village of New Wimpole and hamlet of Arrington Bridge.
There
is a national Census every ten years when the year ends in a one.
The following table gives the population of the Parish of Wimpole
from 1801 to 1951 (the numbers include children and visitors from
outside the parish in temporary residence within Wimpole on the
night of the census). The 1841 Census had a note recording "several large families have left the parish and others have emigrated since 1831".

Parish Boundary Change - Until 1999, the north side of Cambridge Road was known as New Wimpole and was within the Parish of Wimpole. The south side of Cambridge Road was in the Parish of Orwell (and sometimes referred to as 'New Orwell'). You can access the 1901 census information about the 'New Orwell' properties now located in Wimpole here.

much of the building works on the Wimpole estate. It is now a private

Brick End
(Thornberry Hill Cottages)
Brick End, February 1977.
This row of worker's cottages in the area of the estate known as Brick End was
originally built as two double cottages in the 18th century. The middle 'infill' cottage was a 19th century addition. They were photographed here in 1977 when all five cottages were unoccupied. Following extensive restoration and improvement, they are now in private ownership and named "Thornberry Hill Cottages".

(1) It appears the census has confused the generations. I think
that Ashwell is the wife of Isaac the younger and thus
daughter-in-law to Isaac the elder. Also that Thomas is son to Isaac the
younger and Ashwell and thus grandson to Isaac the elder. Isaac Hewitt
the elder (died 1925 aged 93) was married to Charlotte Hewitt (who had died in 1891), and they
are buried together in Wimpole Churchyard.
Therefore, Isaac the elder should be shown as a widower and Isaac the
younger should be shown as married. Hope that's all clear.... I've added a corrected listing to help if not.

It is said the Earl arranged the marriage with John Rumbold in return for him receiving a cottage on the estate and financial support for the child.
(3) "Charlotte... was a Pratt; and she was a picture. The handsomest
woman that I ever remember to have seen. In harvest time to see her swinging
along the road with a bundle of corn balanced on her head, both arms akimbo,
was a study in colour, figure and poise". - "Wimpole As I Knew It" by Rev A.C.Yorke writing
in 1914.

This page was moved to the new .org website in November 2019. The page has been re-headed at the top and re-footed (if re-footed is indeed a word) at the bottom. The page text above this note dated from 2003 and is awaiting resetting. I will rework the images and links as I come to them. All the census information for 1901 is complete.
[1] The 1881 Wimpole Census is fully rebuilt as are the three 'New Orwell' pages.

[3] These pages are being rebuilt after their transfer to the new website. The basic listings remain available for reference during the rebuilding.
