Charles Yorke was the second son of Philip Yorke (1st Earl of Hardwicke) and Margaret Cocks Lygon.
He showed political promise from an early age, attended Cambridge University, was called to the Bar and entered Parliament at the age of 24.
The cause of his early death, whether by natural causes or suicide, has been speculated upon since it happened in 1770, though it is most-likely that the rumor of suicide was spread by Walpole in his book, 'Memoirs of the Reign of George III'.
Yorke was offered the position of Lord Chancellor and the title 'Baron Morden.' This was a position that he had been trained for all his life, but he had pledged himself to the Opposition. In order to keep his word he would have to decline the offer. Yorke's health was already failing, and the pressure of the decision was too much. His family and political colleagues counseled him to refuse. The King urged him to accept, telling him that if Yorke were to refuse this time --- then the position would never again be offered.
On 17 Jan 1770, Yorke accepted the position of Lord Chancellor. He set out immediately for his brother's house to announce his action, but it was there that he found all of the leaders of the Opposition (the very men to whom he had pledged loyalty) in a meeting. After severe reproach and discussion, Yorke returned to his own house.
The effect of his decision seems to have pushed his breaking health over the edge. He died three days later in the room with the Patent of Nobility that would raise him to the peerage. His last act, before his death, was to refuse himself the honor. |

Charles Philip Yorke, fourth Earl of Hardwicke (1799–1873), Admiral, eldest son, by his first wife, of Sir Joseph Sydney Yorke, was born at Sydney Lodge, Southampton, on 2 April 1799. After three years at Harrow, he entered the Royal Naval College at Portsmouth in February 1813, and, having passed with credit through the course, was in May 1815 appointed as a midshipman to HMS Prince, flagship at Spithead. From here he was shortly moved to HMS Leviathan, and thence to the HMS Queen Charlotte, in which he was present at the bombardment of Algiers. He was then sent to HMS Leander, flagship of Sir David Milne, on the North American station, and on 14 August 1819 was promoted to be Lieutenant of HMS Phaëton. On 18 May 1822 he was made Commander, and in August 1823 was appointed to HMS Alacrity, which he took out to the Mediterranean, where he was actively engaged in the suppression of piracy. On 6 June 1825 he was promoted to the rank of Captain, and from 1828 to 1831 commanded HMS Alligator in the Mediterranean, for the most part in Greek waters. He was Member of Parliament for Reigate 1831-1832, and for Cambridgeshire 1832-1834. On the death of his uncle, Philip Yorke, third Earl of Hardwicke, on 18 November 1834, without male issue, Yorke succeeded to the title. In the Peel administration of 1841 he was one of the Lords in Waiting to Queen Victoria, and was appointed in 1842 to attend on the King of Prussia during his visit to England. In 1844-1845 he commanded the Black Eagle yacht, and carried back to the continent the Emperor of Russia, who presented him with a valuable diamond snuff-box. He had no further service in the Navy, and on 12 January 1854 was put on the retired list with the rank of Rear-Admiral, rising by seniority to be Vice-Admiral on 24 November 1858, and Admiral on 3 December 1863. In Lord Derby's ministry of 1852 he was Postmaster-General, with a seat in the cabinet, but had no later office except that of Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, which he held continuously from his accession to the peerage till his death at Sydney Lodge on 17 September 1873. He was interred at Wimpole in the Yorke Family Vault on 24 September. |
