The altar-tomb of Sir Thomas Chicheley (1578-1616).
Chicheley Chapel, St Andrew's Parish Church, Wimpole.
[Some thoughts regarding the current position of the tomb] |
"Here resteth in assurance to rise in Christ Sr Thomas Chicheley of Wimpole, Knight, sometimes Lord of the Towne, and patron of this Church, son of Thomas Chicheley Esq and Anne his wife, daughter of Sr John Bourne, who was Secretary to Queen Mary and of her Privie Council. The which Sr Thomas married Dorothie, one of the daughters and co-heiress of Sr Thomas Kempe of Ollanteygh in the county of Kent, Knight, by whom he was made the joyful father of six children, Dorothie, Anna, Jane, Thomas, Henry, and John. He left this life 12 Nov. in the year of Our Lord 1616, being the 38 year of his age, to whose dear memory Dorothie his wife hath piously erected this monument." |

The Chicheley Family
(Owners of Wimpole from 1428 to 1686) |
The Chicheley (Checheley, Chichele, Checheley, Chichelie) family dominated Wimpole for 250 years from 1428 when Henry Chichele,
Archbishop of Canterbury and founder of All Saints College, Oxford acquired the lease of the principal Wimpole Manors. |
In 1436 the archbishop settled Wimpole on his great nephew, Henry Chicheley. His descendants purchased further property in the area so by the early seventeenth century the estate included a manor house, four of Wimpole’s six manors and all three manors in the neighbouring parish of Wendy. |
The third Thomas Chicheley [1614-1699] recorded here (knight, MP for Cambridgeshire and a Royalist) inherited Wimpole in 1616 when he was two years old. Around 1640 the old medieval manor house was demolished and Chicheley built the first Wimpole Hall (below), although it took over 20 years (interrupted by periods fighting Parliamentarians for the King in the Civil War). The finished house was surrounded by a formal garden and an architectural landscape.
|
|
Wimpole Hall (believed as built) c1660
|
Debts forced Chicheley to sell Wimpole in 1686 to Sir John Cutler, although Chicheley's body was returned in 1699 to be interred in the family vault in Wimpole Parish Church. |
Some parts of Chicheley's original Wimpole Hall still survive within today's building.. |

[Daughter of Thomas (c1578-1616) and Anon. "Jane" is probable and the entry would neatly bookend her 1632 burial [below], but it means the baptism in September 1606 was a year or so ahead of the formal June 1607 marriage between Thomas and Dorithye. Jane is stated in the notice of burial to be the daughter of Lady Dorithye but there appears to be no other evidence of birth for her in the Wimpole records. The confinement might have been away from Wimpole to keep the wedding respectable, which might explain the Rector's confusion [or discretion]. On the inscription on her father's tomb (top of page), she is moved down two places to third in the order of his children, which is a potential blurring of her early arrival. The godparents also possibly appear a little on the low-key side for the first child of a knight of the realm. Bapt Bur Mem MI] |

The Chicheley Altar-Tomb |
Some thoughts on the positioning of the Chicheley altar-tomb (photographed at the head of the page) in the Chicheley Chapel. |
The Chapel is the earliest part of the
present church and is understood to be of 14th century origin, founded around 1390 as the Chantry of Sir William de
Staundon, twice Lord Mayor of London. This was some decades before the arrival of the Chicheley Family and the building was still being recorded as the 'Standon Chantry' in 1524. The Chicheley altar-tomb dates to 1616. |
|
Figure 1 |
The survey drawn for Henry Flitcroft in 1748 [Figure 1] shows a plan of the medieval church with the outline of a proposed new church superimposed over the old [the design shown was not accepted]. Flitcroft's brief was to retain the Chicheley chapel and the 'table tomb' of Sir Thomas and Lady Dorothy Chicheley, whose position Flitcroft indicates [my colouring], while demolishing the rest of the church 'levell with the Ground & Lower, if the walls will easily come down". |
|
Figure 2 |
Detail from a later survey of the Chicheley Chapel [Figure 2], drawn by Henry Povis for John Sloane's office in May 1793, records the tomb in the same position [again, my colouring]. It is thought the Chicheley tomb remained in its original location until 1834 when the Chapel was opened up to the main Church and some of the major monuments in the Chapel had to be repositioned. |
The Chicheley altar-tomb was rather clumsily repositioned to its present position against the north wall, the wall plasterwork partly obscuring the monumental inscription on both ends. |
Given that the Chicheley tomb was originally designed and positioned to be seen from all four sides, is there perhaps a further unrecorded monumental inscription hidden on the side facing the wall? |
